Hurricane Otis arrived in Mexico this Wednesday. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States, cited by the France-Presse news agency, the city of Acapulco, on the Pacific coast, was the first to be affected.

“Satellite images indicate that Otis made landfall near Acapulco around 06:25 GMT (07:25 in Lisbon),” indicated the NHC, confirming that Otis gained strength and became a Category 5 hurricane, the maximum , with winds exceeding 265 kilometers per hour. hour.

At 09:00 GMT (10:00 Lisbon time) the authorities lowered the category of Hurricane Otis to 4, leaving the warning: “Despite its weakening, the phenomenon will bring extremely strong winds and rains in the coming hours capable of cause flooding and landslides.”

In a message on the social network X (formerly Twitter), the Mexican president, Andrés López, asks people to protect themselves and stay in safe places.

Mexico’s army and navy sent more than eight thousand soldiers to the region with specialized equipment to assist in rescue operations.

Authorities closed schools and closed the port of Acapulco, where around 300 fishing boats normally dock.

Otis’s arrival comes just days after Hurricane Norma hit the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula in northern Mexico.

In the Atlantic, Hurricane Tammy continued to move northeast over open waters with winds of 140 kilometers per hour, after passing through the Lesser Antilles over the weekend.

Tammy is located about 915 kilometers south-southeast of Bermuda. According to the NHC, the storm is expected to become a powerful cyclone on Thursday.
