“It is urgent.” WHO urges Hamas to release hostages for “humanitarian and health” reasons

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday urged the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas to provide evidence of the lives of the hostages it is holding and to release them “for humanitarian and health reasons.”

“It is urgent that those who captured hostages prove that they are alive and receiving care, and that they release everyone on humanitarian and health grounds,” WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus said in a statement.

The surprise attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7 resulted in the death of more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians, and the capture of 220 hostages, triggering a new conflict in the Middle East, which this Wednesday turns 19 days old.

Israeli bombings also continue on the Gaza Strip, which have killed more than 6,500 people, almost half of them children, and injured more than 17,000, according to the local Ministry of Health.

Israel also imposed a complete siege on the Palestinian territory, cutting off water, fuel and electricity supplies, causing a critical humanitarian situation.
