Spanish police announced Friday that they have arrested a person suspected of being involved in the October 16 attack in Brussels that killed two Swedish citizens who went to watch the football match between Belgium and Sweden to qualify for the European Championship 2024.
National Police officers have arrested a person in Benahavís (Málaga) in connection with the attack jihadist committed in Belgium,” police said in a statement, without disclosing the suspect’s identity or nationality, adding only that an international arrest warrant from Belgian authorities had been complied with.
The perpetrator of the attack in Brussels, a ‘radicalized’ Tunisian man, was shot dead by Belgian police.
The suspect now detained in Spain had a search warrant “for crimes such as drug trafficking, arms trafficking, money laundering and participation in a criminal organization.” At the time of his arrest, he was carrying forged documents, the statement said.
Based on information provided by the Belgian authorities, an investigation was opened into the possible relationship between this person and the perpetrator of the attacks in Brussels. “Thanks to the efforts carried out, we were able to establish that both were linked to activities related to organized crime,” Spanish police said.
This is not the first arrest after the attack, as two other men suspected of links to the attacker have been arrested in France on charges of criminal association for terrorist purposes and complicity in a murder linked to a terrorist organization.
Last Wednesday, the Belgian Public Prosecution Service also announced the arrest of another person on suspicion of links to the weapon used by the attacker.
Recall that on the night of October 16, Tunisian Abdesalem Lassoued shot dead two Swedish citizens who were in Brussels to watch the match between Belgium and Sweden. A third Swedish citizen was injured in the attack.
Lassoued was located and identified the next morning, but resisted and was shot by police.
