More than a hundred buffaloes drown in northeastern Namibia

More than a hundred buffaloes drowned in a river in northeastern Namibia during a stampede, the country’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism announced in a statement this Friday.

The Namibian Ministry received information this Friday about a buffalo stampede in the Kabulabula area, Zambezi region, an area where the Zambezi River flows and where several protected national parks are located, the note states.

“Around 188 buffaloes drowned in the stampede”, occurred early in the morning, say the Namibian authorities, who believe that the animals were escaping from the lions.

The employees responsible for the nature reserve where the buffaloes roamed were sent to the area to carry out a further accident investigation.

“We will confirm the exact figures and other relevant details as the investigation progresses,” the statement read.

It is not the first time that an accident of this type has occurred in Namibia: in 2018, about 400 buffaloes drowned in the Chobe River, on the border with Botswana, in an attempt to escape from a pride of lions.

Namibia has 20 protected national parks and state-managed forests, occupying around 17% of the country’s land area, where wildlife is abundant and buffalo can only be found in the Zambezi region and the National Park. Waterberg Plateau.
