At least 21 dead and 23 missing after mining accident in Kazakhstan

At least 21 miners died this Saturday and 23 are still being sought after an accident in a mine in central Kazakhstan, according to the steel company.

“The lifeless bodies of 21 miners were found,” announced ArcelorMittal, specifying that “23 workers were still underground and 208 were brought to the surface” from the Kostenko mine, near Karaganda, Kazakhstan.

The Government of Kazakhstan announced this Saturday that it intends to “regain control” of the local subsidiary of ArcelorMittal, after a new accident in a giant coal mine in the global steel sector.

“There is ongoing work to regain control of the company for the benefit of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” the Kazakh government said in a statement on the Telegram social network, cited by the AFP news agency.

The note specifies that the Kazakh government “does not consider a subsequent transfer of ArcelorMittal to other foreign investors.”

Immediately after the announcement of the tragedy, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, ordered, in a press release, “end cooperation” with the group. The Kazakh leader went to the scene of the accident, according to the presidential office.

The Kazakh subsidiary of ArcelorMittal, one of the world’s leaders in the steel and mining sectors, is regularly accused by authorities of failing to respect environmental and safety standards.
