Iranian student Armita Garawand dies after almost a month in a coma

The Iranian student Armita Garawand, who fell into a coma under controversial circumstances in early October in the Tehran subway, died this Saturday, the country’s media announced.

“Armita Garawand, a student from Tehran, died an hour ago after intensive medical treatment and 28 days of hospitalization in the special care unit,” announced the Borna agency, linked to the Iranian Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The teenager, 16 years old and from the Kurdish region, had been admitted to the Fajr hospital in Tehran since October 1, after fainting in the subway in the Iranian capital.

The circumstances of this death are controversial. Authorities stated that the teenager was the victim of a “breakdown” and denied any “verbal or physical alteration” between the teenager and passengers or elements related to the subway.

On Saturday, Iran’s Tasnim agency cited the “official opinion of doctors” that the girl had “suffered a fall that caused brain injuries, followed by continuous seizures, decreased cerebral oxygenation and cerebral edema, following a sudden fall from blood pressure.”

According to non-governmental organizations, the high school student was seriously injured during an attack by members of the moral police, responsible for enforcing the obligation of Iranian women to wear the Islamic veil in public.

This case arose just over a year after the death, on September 16, 2022, of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman who was detained by the moral police for allegedly violating the strict dress code imposed on women in Iran.

This death sparked a widespread protest movement in the country that left several hundred dead, including law enforcement officers, and led to the arrest of thousands of people.
