The US calls on Israel to ‘make a distinction’ between Hamas and Palestinian civilians

The United States argued this Sunday that Israel must “distinguish” between Hamas and Palestinian civilians in its military operations, as the Israeli army intensifies its bombing and ground operations in the Gaza Strip.

“What we believe is that every hour and every day of this military operation, the Israeli government must take every possible measure at its disposal to distinguish between Hamas – the terrorists who are legitimate military targets – and the civilians who are not be.” United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan speaks to CNN.

“This is the advice we give them. This is what we have communicated and we continue to do so at the highest level,” Jake Sullivan added, noting that the President of the United States, Joe Biden, will speak again this Sunday with the First: Israeli Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The two leaders have spoken almost daily since the start of the war sparked by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israeli territory on October 7.

Speaking to ABC, the US National Security Advisor said Hamas is “doing everything in its power to endanger people, to use them as human shields,” but “it is up to Israel to take the necessary measures.” to take.” to make a distinction between Hamas, which does not represent the Palestinian people, and innocent Palestinian civilians.”

Jake Sullivan also said Israel should prioritize “targeted operations.”

The United States is Israel’s main supporter and provides significant military assistance.

US Special Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs in the Middle East, David Satterfield, met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri in Cairo this Sunday.

According to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Shukri stressed to the US envoy during the meeting the need to “implement an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to prevent civilians from being exposed to new plagues of this escalation. [israelita] under false justifications in the name of the right of self-defense.”

Shukri emphasized to Satterfield that the most urgent thing is to “intensify the coordination mechanisms” for the access of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and “remove the obstacles imposed by the Israeli side” to the access of this aid.

The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, causing the deaths of more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, according to authorities. More than 200 people were kidnapped and have remained in the hands of the Islamist group ever since.

After the attack, Israel responded with bombings and ground raids in the Gaza Strip, which is controlled by Hamas.

More than 8,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the war began as a result of three weeks of bombardments carried out by Israel, according to the Health Ministry of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.
