Dozens of protesters stormed an airport in Russia’s Caucasus republic of Dagestan on Sunday evening in search of Israeli citizens after news spread that a plane from Israel was arriving, local media reported.
Protesters broke down terminal doors, with some running onto the runway while others broke through barriers aiming to control cars leaving the airport, according to videos posted on social media and Russian media outlets RT and Izvestia.

Russia’s aviation agency even closed Dagestan’s main airport, diverting flights. “After unknown people entered the traffic zone of Makhachkala Airport, it was decided to temporarily close the airport for arriving and departing flights,” Rossavitsia said, adding that security forces had now arrived on the scene.
“The government of the Republic of Dagestan announces that the situation is under control, police are working on the ground,” the government of the Muslim-majority republic said on Telegram after the airport was closed.
The incident prompted Israel to urge Russia to protect its citizens. “Israel expects Russian authorities to protect all Israeli citizens and all Jews, and to take decisive action against protesters and incitement to violence,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement.
