Dozens of people invaded the airport of Makhachkala, capital of the Russian region of Dagestan, this Sunday and caused some disturbances after learning of the arrival of a plane from Israel.
According to Agence France-Presse, the riots occurred after a plane from Tel Aviv, bound for Moscow, stopped in Makhachkala.
Upon announcing the arrival of the device, dozens of men invaded the runway and the airport terminal, with the intention of checking the passports of the passengers in search of Israeli citizens.
In Dagestan, which belongs to Russia, the population is predominantly Muslim.
Dagestan authorities announced that the situation was “under control,” but the airport was eventually closed and flights were redirected elsewhere.
In a statement, the Israeli government called on Russia to “protect all Israeli citizens and all Jews” and said it takes seriously all “attempts to attack Israeli citizens and Jews around the world.”
The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, causing the death of more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians, according to authorities. More than 200 people were kidnapped and have remained in the hands of the Islamist group since then.
After the attack, Israel responded with bombings and ground raids into the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
Since the start of the war, more than eight thousand people have died in Gaza due to the bombings that Israel has been carrying out for three weeks, according to the Ministry of Health of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.
