At least 13 dead in train collision in India

A collision between two trains killed at least 13 people and injured about 50 on Sunday night in southeastern India, according to a report from local authorities.

The derailment occurred between the cities of Alamanda and Kantakapalle, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, after a passenger train did not obey a signal.

“Thirteen passengers were killed and 50 others injured. Rescue operations are continuing,” local administration official Nagalakshmi S told reporters.

According to the findings of a preliminary investigation, the collision was due to “human error,” India’s Ministry of Railways said in a statement.

India, with one of the most extensive rail networks in the world, has recorded a high number of fatal rail accidents throughout history.

However, security has improved in recent years thanks to investment and technological advancement.

The deadliest accident in the country’s history occurred on June 6, 1981, when seven carriages of a train crossing a bridge in the eastern state of Bihar fell into the Bagmati River, killing between 800 and 1,000 people.

In June, a collision between three trains near Balasore, in the eastern state of Odisha, killed about 300 people and injured more than a thousand.

In August, at least nine people died in southern India when a carriage parked at a station caught fire after a passenger heated water to make tea.
