At least five construction workers were killed and several were reported missing after scaffolding fell into a pit during construction work in Hamburg, northern Germany, on Monday, German authorities said.
The fire brigade of Germany’s second-largest city said the construction site was evacuated after the accident, German news agency DPA reported, adding that several hundred workers had gathered outside.

The accident happened in the Ueberseequartier, part of the port city’s HafenCity district, and is one of Hamburg’s most important construction projects.
HafenCity is a former port area on the River Elbe that is being redeveloped with residential buildings, offices, hotels and shops.
