Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, presented new virtual reality glasses designed for professional use on Tuesday, a year after the name change of that multinational and the announcement of the will to create the metaverse.
The new Meta Quest Pro, which can already be ordered for USD 1,500 (about 1,545 euros) and will go on sale in physical stores on October 25, presents a series of technological advances that aim to improve the perception of users of being really in presence of other people
VR glasses (virtual reality, in Portuguese) must allow visualization, in addition to virtual worlds, of the user’s real environment, thanks to high-resolution cameras facing outwards.
Inward-facing cameras are used to reproduce the user’s facial expressions on their avatar in the virtual universe they are facing, such as a work meeting.
“If someone smiles or frowns (…) their avatar should be able to do it,” explained the executive director of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, in Connect, an online conference that serves to present the advances of the Meta company in VR, technologies and augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) services.
However, Meta is going through a difficult financial period.
After several years of impressive results, the company is facing budget cuts from advertisers due to the bad economic climate and competition from other electronic platforms such as TikTok.
Today, the group also unveiled new partnerships to get its services more widely used in the metaverse, most notably with Microsoft.
