The French meteorological service Météo-France has placed the French departments of Finistère, Côtes-d’Armor and La Manche on red alert and fifteen others on orange alert due to strong winds.
Storm Ciarán, which has hit Portugal in recent days, promises to reach northern France with much more force, with heavy rains and winds of 170 kilometers per hour expected for next morning. At sea, waves can reach 10 meters high.
Météo-France predicts a “very strong autumn storm”, but, according to the newspaper Le Monde, there are meteorologists who call it a “weather bomb”, comparing it to the worst storm in memory in France, when, in December 1999, 92 died. people.
In Portugal, the National Maritime Authority and Navy warned of worsening maritime unrest in mainland Portugal from Thursday to Sunday, with waves expected to reach a maximum height of 17 metres.
Winds are also expected from the northwest quadrant, with an average intensity of up to 85 kilometers/hour and gusts of up to 150 kilometers/hour.
On Monday, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) revealed that the Ciarán depression, which is moving eastwards in the Atlantic, is expected to affect mainland Portugal and Madeira from Thursday, with strong winds and precipitation , mainly in the North and Center.
The institute also forecasts that “a very significant increase in maritime unrest on the 2nd on the west coast, where waves are expected to be from the northwest and reach between five and seven meters in significant height, and with a high probability of exceeding the seven meters”. , specifically the north of Cabo Raso”.
