Beijing recorded an average temperature of 14.5 degrees Celsius at the end of October, the highest since 1961 and an increase of 3.4 degrees compared to the same period last year, the city’s Meteorological Observatory said on Thursday.
According to experts quoted by the official newspaper Global timesDue to global warming, the temperature difference between the northern and southern regions of the country is becoming smaller.
The absence of cold winds, common at this time of year, has also contributed to the high temperatures recorded in the Chinese capital in recent days.
Except for Beijing, all of northern China recorded high temperatures in late October: the city of Tianjin reached a record average temperature of 16.2 degrees Celsius on October 28, the second highest temperature for that day since 1961.
“Strong winds from the north brought cold air that cooled much of the country, but not this year”noted meteorologist Zhang Mingying, quoted by the newspaper.
This situation also affected air pollution in the northern areas. Experts have warned that high levels of pollution will continue until colder air arrives in the coming days.
In 2022, China recorded 16.4 days with an average temperature above 35 degrees Celsius, the highest since 1961, according to the country’s National Meteorological Administration.
Local meteorologists stressed that periods of intense heat, starting “earlier and earlier and ending later and later”, could become the “new normal” in the Asian country, under “the effect of climate change”.
