At least 27 people were killed today in a major fire that broke out at a detox center in northern Iran, a judicial source said.
“Twenty-seven people died and another twelve were hospitalized after a fire broke out at a rehabilitation center for drug addicts in Langarud”a city in Gilan province, north of Tehran, the region’s chief of justice, Esmail Sadeghi, told Iranian justice news agency Mizan Online.
Sadeghi added that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire at the center, which housed 40 people.
Iran’s ISNA news agency published images of the fire, which lit up the night sky and released thick clouds of smoke.
Other images show significant damage to the building, according to news agency France-Presse.
In August, a fire in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar damaged several shops without causing any casualties.
In July 2017, a fire at the 15-storey Plasco shopping mall, also in the Iranian capital, killed 22 people, including 16 firefighters.
