BE considers that Marcelo’s phrase “embarrasses Portugal” and highlights the “ethnic cleansing” in Gaza

The leader of BE considered this Friday that it “embarrasses Portugal” that the President of the Republic has told the head of the Palestinian diplomatic mission that some Palestinians “should not have started” this war with Israel.

“In Gaza, the ethnic cleansing plan is carried out as collective punishment under an argument: ‘someone on the Palestinian side started this’. Said by Marcelo to the Palestinian ambassador, it embarrasses Portugal. #NãoEmMeuName”, reads a post from Mariana Mortágua in the social network

For the BE coordinator, it would have been enough for Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to have requested a ceasefire.

This criticism from Mariana Mortágua comes hours after the President of the Republic told the head of the Palestinian diplomatic mission in Portugal that some Palestinians “should not have started” this war with Israel, advising them to be moderate and peaceful.

“This time it was someone on his side who started it. He shouldn’t have done it,” considered the Portuguese head of state, in dialogue with Nabil Abuznaid, in English, during a visit to the Diplomatic Bazaar, at the Lisbon Congress Center. .

At the end of the conversation, the head of the Palestinian diplomatic mission in Portugal expressed his disappointment at the words of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

“If we want to be fair, we have to condemn the violence on both sides, at least, and condemn the occupation, which is the root of the problem. If we want to be fair. And the President repeated the 2007 attack five times to the press here [de outubro], but he did not mention the people of Gaza. This is unfair,” Nabil Abuznaid told reporters.

Passing by the Palestine stand, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa greeted Nabil Abuznaid, who thanked the Portuguese head of state for the visit at this “very difficult time.”

The President of the Republic agreed that “it is a difficult period”, adding: “But, you know, I think a lot will depend on you. You have to be an example of moderation.”

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa maintained that the October 7 Hamas attack on Israeli territory does not contribute to the fight for a sovereign State of Palestine. “You have to be moderate, otherwise you will lose your mind,” he reinforced.
