The Israeli army announced this Monday the arrest of activist Ahed Tamimi, 22, an international icon of the Palestinian cause, during an operation in the occupied West Bank.
“Ahed Tamimi, suspected of inciting violence and terrorist activities, was detained in the town of Nabi Saleh. Tamimi was transferred to the custody of the Israeli security forces for interrogation,” an army spokesperson told the news agency. French Presse (AFP).
The activist was detained during an Israeli army operation “aimed at arresting people suspected of being involved in terrorist activities and inciting hatred” in the northern occupied West Bank, the same source added.
Ahed Tamimi became famous when she was 14, after she was filmed biting an Israeli soldier to prevent him from stopping her younger brother, pinned to the ground with his arm in a cast.
Since then, he has become a global icon of the Palestinian cause and is considered by Palestinians as an example of bravery in the face of Israeli repression in the occupied Palestinian territories.
A giant portrait of Tamini was painted on the Israeli separation wall in the occupied West Bank, in the Bethlehem sector.
She was detained in 2017 for eight months for slapping two Israeli soldiers in the small courtyard of her family’s home in Nabi Saleh, in the occupied West Bank, asking them to leave.
Since the start of the war triggered on October 7 by the deadly attack against Israel launched by the Islamist movement Hamas, in power in the Gaza Strip, Israeli security forces have carried out mass arrests of Palestinians suspected of violence, incitement to violence or members of Hamas.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, around 150 Palestinians were killed in the occupied West Bank by gunfire by Israeli soldiers or settlers.
