Iran and Iraq call for an end to Israeli attacks and warn of an expansion of the conflict

Iran’s president and Iraqi prime minister called in Tehran on Monday for an end to Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip and warned of the possibility of an expansion of the conflict in the region.

“Both countries clearly underlined that the Zionist regime’s attacks on Gaza must stop as soon as possible and that the people [palestiniano] must be helped by lifting the siege”Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said at a press conference with the head of the Iraqi government, Mohamed Shia al-Sudani, who is visiting Tehran.

The Iranian leader accused the US of lying when the country claimed to seek a ceasefire in Gaza but then vetoed UN Security Council resolutions, “allowing the Zionists to commit more killings.”

“American weapons, secret services and financial aid to the Zionist regime encourage murders and brutal actions against the Palestinian people”Raisi said.

For his part, Al-Sudani stated that “those who do not want the war to spread should pressure Israel to stop the organized genocide and killings in Gaza.”

“The decision not to drag the region into a full-scale war lies in the hands of those who commit crimes against Gaza.”he insisted.

The Iraqi prime minister arrived in Tehran this morning as part of a regional tour that will take him to other countries in the region to discuss the war between Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas.

Al-Sudani met in Baghdad on Sunday with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who stated that the US is working hard to ensure that the conflict in Gaza does not worsen or spread.

Blinken called the attacks by pro-Iranian militias on US bases in Iraq and Syria “totally unacceptable” and warned that the US “will take all necessary measures to protect its personnel”.

These militias are part of an anti-Israel alliance led by Iran that includes militant organizations such as Hezbollah, the Islamist movement Hamas and Islamic Jihad, as well as other groups in Iraq and Syria.

On October 7, Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel with the launch of thousands of rockets and the raid of armed militiamen, taking two hundred hostages.

In response, Israel declared war on Hamas, a movement that has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007 and is classified as terrorist by the EU and the United States, bombing several of the group’s infrastructure facilities in Gaza and launching an all-out siege of the territory imposed. cutting off the water supply, water, fuel and electricity.

The conflict has already caused thousands of deaths and injuries in both areas, among military personnel and civilians.
