Borrell recognizes the “political and moral failure” that aggravated the Palestinian-Israeli conflict

The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs recognized this Monday that the worsening of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is “the result of a collective political and moral failure” and that nothing has been done to really resolve it.

“The tragedy unfolding in the Middle East is the result of a collective political and moral failure, and the Israeli and Palestinian populations are paying a high price for it. This political and moral failure is the result of our unwillingness to solve the Israeli problem. -The Palestinian problem,” said Josep Borrell, at the opening of a conference with ambassadors in Brussels.

“Yes… We have formally committed to the two-state solution, but without a credible plan to achieve that goal. The essence of the Palestinian-Israeli problem is not religious or ethnic. It is a problem of two populations that have the same right living in the same territory, so they need to share it,” added the head of European diplomacy.

However, today “there are no conditions for sharing” and there is no solution.

“Or rather, there was. Do you remember Oslo? 30 years ago? We had that, but we didn’t implement it at all! Violence increased, the numbers are dramatic. It’s too much… What happened?” asked Josep Borrell, before the ambassadors of the 27 EU member states.

The head of European diplomacy acknowledged that there are culprits on both sides: “On the Israeli side, extremist forces in the West Bank want to put an end to the Palestinian problem through submission and exile and in the West Bank Hamas is not present.”

And quoting former North American president Barack Obama, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs recalled that “Israel’s military strategy must respect international law, including that which seeks to avoid the death and suffering of populations.”

“Ignoring the human cost can be counterproductive,” he said.

Josep Borrell recognized that “the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza is unprecedented” and stated that “the best friends of Israel” must convey to Tel Aviv that “it cannot be blinded by anger”, using an expression used by the current president of the United States. United, Joe Biden.

Destroying the Islamist movement Hamas “will not solve the problem in Gaza,” he warned.
