In the letter addressed to the President of the Government, the Ministries of Justice and Internal Administration, and the Secretary General of the Internal Security System, the European Parliament requests “clarifications” on the law that transfers the National Central Office of Interpol and the Unit National Europol under the jurisdiction of the Portuguese Judicial Police, for the Internal Security System, “which is under the supervision of the Prime Minister”.

The letter was sent on 27 September by the chairman of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, in which he refers to the concerns raised by the European Parliament committee, but, as regards the TSF found, no response has yet reached the secretaries of this parliamentary committee.

The Parliament also refers to the fact that the “legislative proposal currently under discussion, based on a recommendation from Brussels, constitutes a fundamental change in the internal organization of the Portuguese structures of international police cooperation”.

Highlighting the “commitment” of the European Parliament in the “defense of the rule of law”, López Aguilar assures that the Civil Liberties Commission expresses “concern” about a possible “risk of political interference or improper access to information on ongoing criminal investigations “. “.

The Spaniard Juan Fernández López Aguilar, who signs the letter addressed to the Portuguese government, stresses that the concerns arose from “reports in the Portuguese media” that account for “the objections and apprehensions of the main elements of civil society, including the Ministry Public, regarding these reforms” of the law. Therefore, he now asks the Portuguese government to send clarifications to the European Parliament.
