G7 supports humanitarian pauses and corridors in Gaza

The foreign ministers of the group of the world’s most industrialized countries (G7), meeting this Wednesday in Tokyo, support the establishment of humanitarian pauses in Gaza with a view to facilitating the creation of a safe corridor that allows the immediate entry of aid.

According to the France-Presse news agency, the G7 countries – Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom – recognize Israel’s right to defend itself “according to international law” and appeal to that Iran will refrain from supporting Hamas.

The G7 aims to balance criticism of Hamas’ attacks against Israel and therefore calls for “urgent action” to help civilians in the besieged Palestinian enclave who need food, water, medical care and shelter.

Before the G7 meeting, Japan had already expressed its intention to work on a “unified message to calm the situation in the Middle East.” The United States also defended a humanitarian pause in Israeli offensives, despite the fact that Secretary of State Antony Blinken failed to convince the Israeli government on his recent visit to the country.

The war in Ukraine was another of the main points on the agenda of the G7 foreign ministers, who reaffirmed that their support “will never waver.”

“We also call on the China not helping Russia in the war against Ukraine,” the ministers defended in a joint statement after the talks in Japan.

At the leaders’ summit held last May in the Japanese city of Hiroshima, the G7 countries had already promised to help Ukraine “for as long as necessary” and “by all possible means.”

Furthermore, the foreign ministers discussed the growing instability in the Asia-Pacific region due to China’s military rise, tensions around Taiwan and North Korea’s weapons development, along with strengthening ties with Moscow and Iran.

The G7 joint statement reaffirms the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, as well as respecting international law in the East and South China Seas, where several incidents have occurred between Chinese ships and ships from other countries. Asians.
