The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy considered this Saturday that Brussels must be prepared to replace Washington in political and material support for Ukraine.
“We Europeans, who have the necessary means to do so, must be willing politically and materially to help Ukraine and even to take control of the United States if, as is likely, its support decreases,” said Josep Borrell in a video released. The diplomat assured that Europe has already “fulfilled its responsibilities”, both with its support so far and with the recommendation to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU approximately a year and a half after Kiev’s request.
“We must remain united and prepare for a conflict longer than Russia thought, which Russia will never be able to win, but whose end could be postponed,” said the head of EU diplomacy, who described Vladimir Putin’s regime as “addicted to the war”.
The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 of last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since the Second World War (1939-1945).
Ukraine’s Western allies have supplied weapons to kyiv and passed successive sanctions packages against Russian interests to try to diminish Moscow’s ability to finance the war effort.
