At least 40 workers were trapped when a road tunnel under construction in northern India collapsed on Sunday, an emergency services official said.
“About 200 meters of the tunnel collapsed,” Durgesh Rathodi, a rescue worker, told French news agency France-Presse from the site in Uttarakhand state.
“There are still 40 or 41 workers trapped inside. Oxygen is being supplied by the debris, but more debris is falling as rescuers try to remove the obstacle,” he added.

The collapse occurred in the early hours of Sunday, in the Himalayan region, when a group of workers left the shipyard and a replacement team arrived.
The 4.5 km long tunnel is being constructed between Silkyara and Dandalgaon to connect the two important Hindu shrines of Uttarkashi and Yamnotri.
Photos released by rescue teams show huge concrete blocks blocking the tunnel, with twisted metal bars on the roof protruding from the rubble.
“Pray to God that the workers stuck in the tunnel come out safely,” Uttarakhand Prime Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami wrote on social network X (formerly Twitter).
I think this is a good thing I think I did well है। I think I did a good job I think I can do that I think I did a good job I think it’s a good choice…
