UN condemnation of Russian ‘illegal annexations’ sends ‘clear message’ to Moscow

The condemnation by most UN General Assembly member countries of Russia’s “illegal annexations” of Ukrainian territory sent a “clear message” to Moscow, the US president said on Wednesday.

Joe Biden stressed that this position shows that Russia cannot “wipe a sovereign state off the map.”

The US head of state added, in a statement, that “143 nations were on the side of freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The 193 member states of the UN General Assembly approved this Wednesday, by 143 votes in favor, a resolution condemning the annexation of Ukrainian territories by Russia, reinforcing Moscow’s isolation on the international stage.

Russia, Belarus, Syria, North Korea and Nicaragua voted against and 35 countries abstained, including China, India, Pakistan and South Africa.

In addition to demanding that Russia revoke the annexation of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporyjia, the resolution declares that Moscow’s actions violate Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and are incompatible with the principles of the UN Charter.

The resolution clearly condemns Russia’s “so-called illegal referendums” and “illegal annexation attempt” and says they are invalid under international law.

The text also promotes conflict resolution through “political dialogue, negotiation, mediation and other peaceful means”, while respecting Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders and the principles of the UN Charter.
