Guterres “deeply disturbed” by the situation in Gaza calls for a ceasefire “in the name of humanity”

The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, expressed this Tuesday “deeply disturbed” by the “horrible” situation in several hospitals in Gaza, reinforcing calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire “in the name of humanity.” “

“The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the horrific situation and the dramatic loss of life in several hospitals in Gaza,” said Stéphane Dujarric, a spokesman for Guterres.

“In the name of humanity, the Secretary-General calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire,” stressed Guterres’ spokesperson.

Still regarding the situation in Gaza hospitals, the organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) called this Tuesday for an investigation into Israeli attacks on health facilities, medical personnel and transportation because they could constitute war crimes.

The attacks “are further destroying Gaza’s health system,” said the New York-based human rights organization in a report cited by the Spanish agency EFE.

HRW called on the Israeli government to stop attacks on hospitals and defended an investigation by the International Criminal Court and the Independent International Commission of Inquiry into the occupied Palestinian territories.

Israel claims the Islamist group Hamas has a network of tunnels and military infrastructure under and around hospitals in the Gaza Strip.

Tel Aviv on Monday accused Hamas of using the Rantisi pediatric hospital to hide militants who carried out the October 7 attack in Israel and to hold hostages who were taken prisoner at the time.

The unprecedented attack by Hamas caused 1,200 deaths and sparked a war that has killed more than 11,000 people in the Gaza Strip, according to figures released by the Islamist group, which has controlled the territory since 2007.
