“I am grateful to the United Kingdom for its support.” Zelensky meets with David Cameron

The British Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, met this Thursday with the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky. On Cameron’s first visit to Ukraine, defense was the main issue on the table.

“Weapons for the front line, reinforcement of air defense, protection of our people and critical infrastructure. I thank the United Kingdom for the support,” Zelensky said, in a statement posted on social media.

“We will continue to give them the moral support, the diplomatic support, the economic support, but above all the military support that they need, not only this year and next, but for as long as necessary,” Cameron said during the meeting with Zelensky.

Zelensky thanked Cameron for traveling to Ukraine while the world’s attention was focused on the Middle East conflict.

Ukraine’s president warned Tuesday that the Ukrainian military is facing an “increasing number of attacks” from Russia in the east of the country, particularly around the disputed town of Avdiïvka.

Moscow’s troops have been trying for a month to surround this industrial city that has become one of the flashpoints of the conflict, a Russian effort that comes after months of Ukrainian offensives that did not allow Kiev to liberate the occupied territories.

The eastern front line has been in the same place for practically a year, despite the fact that Zelensky, on the one hand, and the Kremlin (Russian Presidency), on the other, guarantee that the war is not at a stalemate.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a US-based think tank, indicated on Monday in its latest report that “Russian forces continued their offensive operations near Avdiïvka on November 13 and made confirmed gains.” .

Ukraine recently acknowledged the failure of its counteroffensive launched last June, which collided with solid Russian defenses, but urgently needs to gain ground to avoid the fatigue effect of its Western allies in a conflict that has been going on for almost two years. years.

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a military offensive in Ukraine that caused, according to UN data, the worst refugee crisis in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945) and in the last 20 months a high number of victims. not only military but also civilians, impossible to count as long as the conflict continues.
