Karol G., Lafourcade and Shakira awarded at the Latin Grammys with no Portuguese winners

Colombian singer-songwriter Karol G. and Mexico’s Natalia Lafourcade won the Latin Grammys for Best Album and Best Recording respectively at the Seville gala, while Shakira won Best Song.

The Latin Grammy Album of the Year went to Karol G.’s “Mañana will be beautiful”, which surpassed the likes of Pablo Alborán and Ricky Martin, while Natalia Lafourcade received the Record of the Year award on Thursday evening with “De Todas las Flores” , ahead of artists like Alborán, Rosalía, Cristina Aguilera and Alejandro Sanz.

“De Todas las Flores” also won Best Album from ‘Cantautor’ and Best Song from ‘Cantautor’.

Colombian Shakira won the Song of the Year award (“Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53”), with Argentinian DJ and producer Bizarrap, while Venezuelan singer-songwriter Joaquina received the award for Best New Artist.

In this edition of the Latin Grammys, which included the Portuguese Carminho and Maria Mendes, it was Brazilian music that stood out among the awards for expression in the Portuguese language.

Brazilian singer Gaby Amarantos surpassed Carminho with “TecnoShow”, chosen as Best Roots Music Album in the Portuguese Language. Carminho was nominated for the album “Portuguesa”.

Gaby Amarantos, born in Belém, Pará state, called for the preservation of the Amazon upon receiving the award, which he dedicated to “all black women in Brazil.”

In the Portuguese language categories: “Em Nome da Estrela”, by Xênia França (best contemporary pop album), “Jardineiros”, by Planet Hemp (best rock album), “Negra Ópera”, by Martinho da Vila (best rock album) were also awarded: Best Samba Album), “Distopia”, by Planet Hemp and Criolo (Best Urban Interpretation), “Decretos Reais”, posthumous album by Marília Mendonça (Best Country Music), “Tudo O Que A Fé Pode Tocar”, by Tiago Iorc ( Best Song) and “Serotonina”, the last new album by João Donato, singer, pianist, composer and exponent of Bossa Nova, who passed away last July (Best Brazilian Popular Music Album).

Maria Mendes was nominated for Best Arrangement, with the North American pianist and producer John Beasley, for the version of “Com que Voz”, from the live album “Saudade, Color of Love”, but this Latin Grammy went to the musician Rafael Valência for the arrangement of “Songo Bop”, from the album “Made in Miami”, which also won the Latin Grammy for Best Instrumental Album.

The Latin Grammy gala also recognized the Astor Piazzolla Quintet, which won Best Tango Album (“Operation Tango”), and Omara Portuondo, who won Best Traditional Tropical Album (“Vida”).

North American musician of Mexican descent Édgar Barrera, who had 13 nominations, the highest number in this edition, won the titles of Composer and Producer of the Year and Best Mexican Song (“x100to”).

Saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera, of Cuban descent, winner of the Best Latin Jazz Album (“I missed you too”) and the Best Contemporary Classical Composition (“Concerto Venozelano”), dedicated his awards to “all the people of Cuba and Venezuela, it will one day be free.”

The gala for this 24th edition of the Latin Grammys, which included 56 categories of different expressions of Latin music, took place in Seville and was the first to take place outside the United States.
