Two prisoners executed for murder in the United States

Two American inmates were executed Thursday in the states of Alabama and Texas, both convicted of murder.

The execution in Texas was the second carried out on the same day in the United States, after Alabama executed a man convicted of murder in 1993 minutes earlier.

The last time two prisoners were executed in one day was exactly one year ago, on November 16, 2022.

David Santiago Renteria, 53, was sentenced to death for the murder of a five-year-old girl in November 2001. He was declared dead at 7:11 p.m. (1:11 a.m. this Friday in Lisbon), after receiving a lethal injection in the Huntsville prison, near Houston, reported the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

In Alabama, Casey McWhorter, 49, was executed for the 1993 murder of a friend’s father and was pronounced dead at 6:47 p.m. (12:47 a.m. Friday) after receiving a lethal injection at the Alabama prison. Atmore, the Alabama Department of Corrections said.

On November 18, 2001, Rentería kidnapped 5-year-old Alexandra Flores in the Mexican border city of El Paso.

Security cameras showed the man taking the girl. The next morning, the body was found, naked and burned, in an alley approximately 25 kilometers from the site of the kidnapping. The autopsy showed that Alexandra Flores had been strangled.

On February 18, 1993, when he was 18, McWorther and his friends Daniel Miner, 16, and Edward Lee Williams Jr., 15, planned the robbery and murder of Miner’s father, Edward Lee Williams, tall. 33 years old.

McWorther was the only one of the three defendants sentenced to death, as he was of age at the time of the crime. Miner and Williams Jr. were sentenced to life in prison and remain in prison, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

McWorther’s execution was the second of the year in Alabama and Renteria’s was the eighth of the year in Texas. So far throughout the country, the death penalty has been applied 23 times.

Since the Supreme Court reintroduced the death penalty in 1976, 1,581 people have been executed in the United States, 72 of them in Alabama and 586 in Texas.
