Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, Egypt has mobilized to evacuate wounded people from the Gaza Strip to hospitals near North Sinai, to manage access of humanitarian aid and fuel to the enclave, and to mediate the release of hostages and a ceasefire.
The Egyptian president called on the international community to fulfill its responsibilities and, in this regard, “implement the resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations.”
During the meeting, the parties also discussed ways to improve cooperative relations between Egypt and the European Union, within the scope of their strategic partnership.
After the meeting, von der Leyen traveled to the Rafah border crossing, which connects northern Egypt’s Sinai with the Gaza Strip, to see on the ground how humanitarian aid is entering the Palestinian enclave.
