Singer Taylor Swift postponed concert in Rio de Janeiro due to extreme heat

American singer Taylor Swift postponed her performance today in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) due to “extreme temperatures” in the city, a day after a spectator died at another of her concerts.

In a message shared on social media, Taylor Swift wrote that she decided to postpone today’s concert due to the extreme heat wave in Brazil and for reasons of public and technical team safety.

The announcement of the postponement of the concert, until Monday, was made at a time when a few thousand people were already in the Nilton Santos stadium, which has a capacity for 60,000 people.

On Friday, a 23-year-old Brazilian spectator died of cardiorespiratory arrest following heat stroke, before Taylor Swift’s first concert in Rio de Janeiro.

Following this death, the Brazilian government opened an investigation into restrictions that prevent attendees of large concerts from bringing their own water bottles.

On her Instagram account, Taylor Swift said she was shocked by what happened and sent condolences to her follower’s family and friends.

Brazil is experiencing an intense heat wave and Rio de Janeiro recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius on Friday, with a thermal sensation that reached 59 degrees in some areas of the city.

Several concertgoers were treated by the medical services of the Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium for health problems related to the heat.

The North American artist has another concert scheduled for Sunday in Rio de Janeiro, as part of her world tour The Eras Tour.

The singer will perform in Portugal, on May 24 and 25, at the Estádio da Luz, in Lisbon.
