Former US First Lady Rosalynn Carter has died

Former US First Lady Rosalynn Carter, wife of President Jimmy Carter, died on Sunday at the age of 96, after months of deteriorating health. He suffered from dementia and on Saturday the Carter Center said he was receiving palliative care at home.

Jimmy Carter, who served in the White House between 1977 and 1981 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, is 99 years old and has also been receiving home care since February, after several hospital admissions. His wife, whom he married in 1946, was one of his closest advisors, even participating in board meetings and representing her husband on foreign trips.

“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” the former president said, quoted in a Carter Foundation note. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn existed, I always knew someone loved and supported me.”

It was with Rosalynn Carter that the Office of the First Lady was officially created, with some even calling her “co-president,” according to the Associated Press.

The couple had four children.
