At least 228 people have landed in the Canary Islands since Sunday

At least 228 people disembarked in the last few hours in Lanzarote, El Hierro and Gran Canaria, according to Spanish organizations Maritime Rescue and Emergency Services.

On Sunday afternoon, 39 North Africans (32 men and seven women) who were aboard precarious boats in international waters, 52 kilometers northwest of Arrecife, were rescued.

Another boat that had been sighted late Sunday afternoon was towed in the same port, but the number of occupants of this boat has not yet been released.

During the night, the occupants of two boats disembarked in El Hierro: in the first, 63 citizens of sub-Saharan origin were traveling and in the second, 117 people.

This Monday morning, a ship from the Spanish authorities rescued nine people of sub-Saharan origin who were aboard a precarious boat 241 kilometers south of Gran Canaria.

These nine people were initially sighted by an oil tanker heading to Brazil.
