Maurício Macri, elected president of Argentina in 2015, suffered a humiliating defeat when he lost re-election to Alberto Fernández, the Peronist candidate, in the 2019 first round. However, after four years in the shadows, the news of his political death appeared to be exaggerated.
Defeated again in the first round – Patrícia Bullrich, his ally in the Proposta Renovadora party and in the Juntos Por El Cambio coalition, was left out of the decision after receiving only 24% of the votes -, Macri dared to bet on support Javier Milei, the unknown radical left in the fight against Peronism, represented by Sergio Massa.
Along the way, he divided the party – Horacio Rodríguez Larreta and other barons refused to accompany him – and the coalition – the Radical Civil Union party, the largest of the allies, did not endorse this support either.
But with the victory he heard not only Peronism, his eternal antagonism, on his knees, but also the praise of Milei, with whom he shortly afterwards took a photo during his victory speech. “I would like to thank Ms. Bullrich and Mr. Macri for the act of greatness never seen before in the history of Argentina, who selflessly gave their bodies to the bullets to defend change.”
“Disinterested” obviously does not apply: Macri and Macrismo can take over the Economy, Justice and Security portfolios (for Bullrich himself) in the Milei government in exchange for support in the campaign, before and in Congress, from now on. “It will not be a co-government, but we will follow it,” Macri summarized.
