A U.S. Navy plane flying in the rain Tuesday overshot the runway of a military base on Hawaii island and crashed into the waters of Kaneohe Bay, but all nine passengers on board were unharmed.
The Coast Guard responded to the accident, but rescue operations were quickly halted as there was no need to assist the passengers.
Authorities have not yet provided information on the reasons for the accident.
A photo taken by a witness shows the plane resting in the water near shore, in a view reminiscent of 2009’s “Miracle on the Hudson,” when a passenger plane piloted by Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger made an emergency landing in a New York Harbor. River York.
The P-8A involved in today’s accident and the Airbus A320 that Sullenberger piloted are approximately the same size.
The P-8A is often used for hunting submarines and for military reconnaissance and intelligence gathering, and is manufactured by the Boeing company.
The aircraft belongs to a company of Patrol Squadron 4, based on Whidbey Island, Washington.
The Hawaii Marine Corps Base is located approximately 10 miles from Honolulu, on Oahu, and is home to approximately 9,300 military personnel and 5,100 family members.
