Since the beginning of last year, the private planes of two hundred celebrities, CEOs, oligarchs and billionaires have made nearly 45,000 trips, causing a level of pollution similar to that of 40,000 Britons.
In total, these planes have been in the air for the equivalent of 11 years, The Guardian newspaper stated this Tuesday, which analyzed public data to track the flights of personalities such as Elon Musk, Roman Abramovich and even the Rolling Stones.
Precisely, among the most polluting airplanes is the Boeing 767, belonging to Mick Jagger’s band, which produced more than five thousand tons of CO2, the equivalent of 1,763 round-trip flights between London and New York.
Lawrence Stroll, the billionaire owner of the Aston Martin Formula 1 team, has made the most trips of 15 minutes or less, having logged a total of 1,512 flights since 2022.
The carrying out of these trips, which cause high levels of pollution, has been increasingly criticized. Some public figures, who have been judged for their habitual use of private planes, have changed their habits: for example, Taylor Swift went from taking 19 flights a month to only two.
In total, the almost 300 private planes emitted around 415,518 tons of CO2, although the owner was on board on all trips. In reality, almost 40% of flights do not have any passengers, as they often travel precisely to pick up people.
The Guardian also notes that since the Covid-19 pandemic there has been a “marked” increase in the use of private jets, and in Europe their use has reached the highest level since the peak in 2007. Forecasts also indicate that the sale of Private jets are expected to reach the highest value ever recorded this year.
