US court dismisses rape complaint against Cristiano Ronaldo

An American court on Tuesday rejected an appeal from American Kathryn Mayorga, who asked for damages of 25 million dollars (23.6 million euros) from Cristiano Ronaldo.

In the 2009 alleged rape case, Mayorga’s defense had asked the 9th District Court of Appeal in San Francisco to overturn a Las Vegas federal judge’s decision in June 2022 to affirm the filing of the case. the civil compensation procedure, started in 2018.

The lawyer argued that Judge Jennifer Dorsey should not have rejected Mayorga’s attempts to make public the confidential agreement he signed in 2010 in which he received $375,000 (about 343,500 euros).

The American woman, who accuses the Portuguese international of raping her in a Las Vegas hotel in 2009, even asked for damages of 25 million dollars (23.6 million euros).

A three-judge panel of the appeals court rejected the argument that Dorsey abused his discretion by fining Mayorga’s lawyer, Leslie Mark Stovall, $335,000 (almost 307,000 euros) for “bad faith” in the lawsuit .

Dorsey accused Stovall of improperly basing the civil damages case on stolen confidential documents showing communications between Cristiano Ronaldo and his lawyers.

The news of the financial agreement with Mayorga was made public by the German media outlet Der Spiegel, in an article published in 2017 entitled ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’s Secret’, based on documents obtained from the digital platform ‘Football Leaks’.

“The court clearly recognized the seriousness of dismissing the case and accordingly provided a thorough analysis amply supported by factual findings,” Judge Johnnie Rawlinson wrote in the six-page opinion on Tuesday.
