Car explodes on a bridge on the US-Canada border

A car exploded on the Rainbow Bridge that connects the United States with Canada, near Niagara Falls, on Wednesday. The reason for the explosion, which forced the border to close, is not yet known and federal authorities in the city of Buffalo, New York, are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

What is certain is that the two occupants of the vehicle were killed, according to police sources cited by CNN, information also provided by Fox News.

According to information from CNN and ABC television channels, the vehicle underwent an initial passport check at the border and was then sent to another area for a new check. It was right at the moment that the vehicle was heading towards that second checkpoint the explosion occurred.

According to the Fox News station, the car was carrying explosives and injured a border patrol agent. The same television channel quotes police sources as guaranteeing that it is an attempted terrorist attack, but this has not yet been officially confirmed.

The television station also said that all bridges in the region were closed and all government buildings had been evacuated.

Officials have not yet revealed the reasons for the explosion and speaking to CNN, Aaron Ferguson, spokesman for the mayor of Niagara Falls, was very cautious: “We don’t know much more, only that it was a car trying to enter the United States . States, the border is closed.”
