A shooter killed five people, including an off-duty police officer, in Raleigh, in the southeastern United States, on Friday, the mayor of this city announced at night.
Several people were also injured, and the shooter is still on the run but “surrounded,” the authorities of this North Carolina municipality reported at a press conference.

“At approximately 8 p.m., Raleigh police reported surrounding a suspect at an area residence,” Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said, lamenting “a sad and tragic day.”
Among the injured, whose number the authorities have not given, is a police dog whose vital prognosis is not compromised, according to the mayor. The United States pays a very high price for the spread of firearms on its soil and the ease with which Americans have access to them.
Some 49,000 people died from gunshot wounds in 2021, up from 45,000 in 2020, which was already a record year. This represents more than 130 deaths per day, more than half of which are suicides.
