A 77-year-old Portuguese man was arrested Tuesday for trying to rape a Hungarian tourist at a hostel in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.
According to the portal G1the suspect allegedly pushed the tourist against the wall and threatened her in a hostel in Cosme Velho, in Rio’s southern zone.
The incident happened on Monday in a shared room.
The Portuguese national, who has lived in Brazil for more than thirty years and is a repeated perpetrator of these types of attacks, was arrested after the victim made a statement and left the country.
“This arrest was possible thanks to the integration with the military police and private hotel security,” Patrícia Alemany, chief deputy of the Police Department for Special Tourist Assistance (DEAT), told G1.
The Portuguese national is well known to the hostel staff, having stayed there a few times, and his awkward attitudes, such as walking around communal areas in his underwear and harassing tourists, have been reported.
The first judicial hearing should take place in the coming days.
