Moreira da Silva “totally focused” on the UN refuses to return to national politics in the short term

The former candidate for the leadership of the PSD, Jorge Moreira da Silva, showed himself this Thursday committed to his work as deputy secretary general of the United Nations, ruling out the possibility of a return to national politics in the short term.

“I am totally focused on the United Nations, it is very difficult for me to find a challenge as mobilizing as the one I have. I lead an organization that carries out a thousand projects a year in 85 developing countries,” said Jorge Moreira da Silva, after being asked about the possibility of challenging Luís Montenegro’s leadership if the PSD does not win the early legislative elections next year.

On the sidelines of a forum on infrastructure at the service of the sustainability and resilience of communities, in Brussels, Jorge Moreira da Silva, current assistant secretary general of the United Nations, rejected that it is “undermining national political life.”

“I’m just saying I’m no longer part of that discussion,” he said.

The former Minister of the Environment, Territorial Planning and Energy in the Government of Pedro Passos Coelho (2011 – 2015) competed for leadership with Luís Montenegro, after the departure of Rui Rio, following the early legislative elections in January 2022.

Montenegro won the direct PSD elections on May 28, 2022 with 72.48% of the militants’ votes, becoming the nineteenth social democratic president.
