Charleroi Mayor Paul Magnette reported today that at least 85 graves from the Jewish canton in one of the city’s cemeteries had been desecrated and several objects and bronze Stars of David had been stolen.
In a statement, the mayor said that “the chosen location and the theft of numerous Stars of David leave little doubt as to the anti-Semitic nature of the intentions” and that he had already instructed his services to inform the families.
The desecrations were discovered on Wednesday by the gravedigger of the cemetery of Marcinelle, a neighborhood in Charleroi. The facts date from the night before.
The municipality has filed a complaint and opened an investigation.
Belgium has seen an increase in anti-Semitic actions since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7.
“Anti-Semitism is an evil that must be fought with all our might,” Paul Magnette, also chairman of the French-speaking Socialist Party, said today.
