The city of Venice, in Italy, will begin charging, in April 2024, a new entrance fee of five euros for tourists who visit the town for one day during the busiest seasons. The measure was adopted to minimize the damage caused by mass tourism.
The first dates of entry into force of the tax, concentrated in the high tourist season, are from April 25 to May 5.
Then there will be the weekends in May -11 and 12, 18 and 19, 25 and 26-, in June -8 and 9, 15 and 16, 22 and 23, 29 and 30- and two weekends in July -6 and 7-. 13 and 14. In total, the rate will apply for 29 days a year.
The tax will only be charged to tourists who arrive in the city between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., the City Council explained in a statement.
“It is not a revolution, but the first step of a system that regulates the access of daily visitors,” explained the mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, quoted in the note.
“It is an experience whose objective is to improve the quality of life in the city, both for those who live and for those who work in it,” he added, highlighting that “Venice is the first city in the world to implement this system.”
The project, announced in September, aims to deter visitors who flock to the city known worldwide for its canals, bridges, palaces and works of art.
In September, Venice narrowly escaped being included on UNESCO’s list of endangered world heritage sites, as experts from this UN agency had requested in July, due to the risk to which the city is exposed due to tourism. masses and climate change.
