New York mayor accused of sexual assault in 1993

The mayor of the North American city of New York, Eric Adams, was accused by a woman of sexually assaulting her in 1993, according to a subpoena released Wednesday.

The three-page document provides no details about the alleged assault but names Adams, the New York Police Department’s Traffic Division and the department’s Guardian Association as suspects.

“The complainant was sexually assaulted by defendant Eric Adams in New York in 1993, when they both worked for the City of New York,” reads the summons, which asks for a judgment and five million dollars (4.6 million euros) in damages is requested. .

The complaint was filed in Manhattan State Supreme Court.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Adams denied sexually assaulting anyone and said he did not remember meeting the woman.

“Absolutely nothing happened. I don’t remember meeting this person and I would never hurt anyone in this dimension. It didn’t happen,” Adams said.

Adams, a Democrat, was an NYPD officer who rose to captain before entering politics. Before becoming speaker of the chamber, he was a senator.

The summons was filed under the Adult Survivors Act, a special New York law that created a one-year delay from the usual deadline for filing a lawsuit alleging sexual abuse.

The law paved the way for a wave of lawsuits against public figures for sexual misconduct, with a number of cases emerging in recent weeks before the law expires today.

The most recent was a lawsuit, also filed on Wednesday, in which a woman accuses actor Jamie Foxx of sexual assault, which allegedly took place on the terrace of a restaurant in the North American city in 2015.

Last year, the law gave rise to more than 2,500 lawsuits, including against former US President Donald Trump, hip-hop mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and comedian and actor Russell Brand.

The lawsuit comes as Adams has been the target of an FBI investigation into the 2021 campaign, which led to agents seizing cellphones and raiding the home of his top campaign fundraiser.
