Former Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius is released on parole

Former Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius will be released on parole starting January 5, 2024, according to Reuters. The decision was announced this Friday by the South African Department of Correctional Services.

“Mr. Pistorius will serve the remainder of his sentence in the community corrections system and will be subject to supervision in accordance with the conditions of parole until his sentence expires,” the Department of Correctional Services said in a statement.

Known as the “Blade Runner” for his carbon fiber prosthetic legs, Pistorius will be released on parole after serving ten years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

In March, Pistorius had already been denied parole after it was ruled that the former Olympic athlete had not served the required minimum prison sentence.

The former Paralympic champion has been in prison since 2013. He was sentenced to five years in prison for the involuntary murder of his girlfriend, but in 2017, after two appeals, the Supreme Court of South Africa considered that Pistorius committed a crime of murder and sentenced him to 13 years and five months in prison.

In 2013, Pistorius fired four shots at the bathroom door where his girlfriend was, thinking he was a thief. However, testimony of an argument between the couple led to Pistorius’ conviction for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp.
