There is a Portuguese-Israeli citizen released by Hamas this Friday. Adina Galante, 72, is part of the group of 13 women and children released by Hamas.
Adina Galante or Adina Moshe, as she is known in Israel, was one of the first freed hostages to be identified. A descendant of Sephardic Jews expelled from the Iberian Peninsula in the late 15th century, Ella Adina received Portuguese nationality while captive in the Gaza Strip.
The Portuguese-Israeli woman was kidnapped on October 7. She was at her home, in Kibbutz Nir Oz, where she lived with her husband Said Moshe, murdered by Hamas. She has four children and when they took her she was in pajamas and without shoes. She visits Portugal quite regularly.
Portuguese Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho confirmed Adina’s release.
“We were really hopeful, we did not want to talk too much about the issue. We had hope and it is confirmed that it came true,” commented the head of Portuguese diplomacy, who is visiting Israel and the West Bank.
The Portuguese official explains that he was a person who knew how to “speed up” the process of granting nationality. Cravinho also revealed that “there are more” Portuguese among the Hamas hostages, but declined to reveal the number.
Hamas released 24 hostages this Friday, 13 of whom are Israelis. In addition to these there are ten Thais and one Filipino. The Thai and Filipino hostages were the protagonists of another Hamas agreement with Egypt and Qatar.
Across the border, Israel freed 39 Palestinians. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry reported that 39 women and children who were being held in Israeli prisons had been released. They are expected to return to the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
This is the first group of a total of 150 detainees who are expected to be released in the coming days.
