An avalanche killed five climbers and injured four other members of an Iranian climbing team in western Iran, local state media reported on Saturday.
According to state news agency IRNA, rescue teams recovered the bodies of the five climbers from the summit of San Boran, about 300 kilometers southwest of the capital Tehran. The other four injured people were taken to hospital.
According to the incident report, the team of nine climbers began their journey last Thursday despite local authorities warning of possible risks, namely that the summit, the highest in the Oshtrankooh Mountains at 4,150 meters, had been the scene from heavy rain and snow in recent weeks.
Iran has occasionally seen deadly avalanches. In 2020, a series of avalanches killed twelve people in a mountainous area north of Tehran.
