The head of Jordanian diplomacy affirmed this Saturday that Israel “does not want to talk or listen” about the boycott of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) meeting, but warned that Tel Aviv will have to answer for the “war crimes in Gaza “.
“Israel decided not to come, they are boycotting this event, it is their decision. We see Israel attacking everyone who disagrees with them – secretary general [das Nações Unidas] Guterres, [o chefe da diplomacia europeia] Josep Borrell -, anyone who does not subscribe to Israeli aggression or even calls for a ceasefire,” said this Saturday the Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Safadi, questioned by Lusa after a meeting with his Portuguese counterparts, João Gomes Cravinho, and Slovenian Tanja Fajon, in Amman.
The Jordanian leader gave the example of “the Israeli reaction to the very reasonable, practical, evaluative and politically healthy position of the prime ministers of Spain and Belgium,” he commented, alluding to Tel Aviv’s decision to withdraw the Spanish and Belgian ambassadors. Belgian. by the statements of their respective prime ministers, on a visit to Israel this week, which he considered “support for terrorism.”
“Israel does not want to talk and does not listen at this moment, but it will have to assume responsibilities for the war crimes it is committing in Gaza and which we consider part of the concept of the legal definition of genocide,” highlighted the Jordanian minister, who co-chairs, along with Josep Borrell, the UfM meeting, which will take place next Monday in Barcelona.
The meeting brings together the 27 members of the European bloc and 15 Mediterranean countries, including the Palestinian Authority, and was supposed to discuss the 15th anniversary of the organization and the “ongoing reforms”, but the program now has as its only point “the critical situation in Israel and Gaza-Palestine, as well as the consequences in the region.
Given the change in agenda, Tel Aviv decided to cancel its participation, considering that the change “risks transforming [a UpM] in another international forum in which Arab countries criticize Israel.
According to the Jordanian minister, the meeting “will allow for a frank and open conversation between neighbors and partners on how to end this war and respond to the catastrophic humanitarian impact, first of all on the Palestinians who suffer unprecedented horrors committed by the Israeli war.” .
Israel, he stressed, “cannot have the possibility of vetoing the talks or preventing the international community from doing what is in its best interest, which is a just and lasting peace based on a two-state solution.”
Participants are expected to debate the humanitarian response and “how to move from this terrible moment to a peace plan that ensures no one in the region has to experience the horrors we are witnessing again.”
“Let us take a stand against this terrible war and for peace. Let us see how we can work with European partners, who have always played a crucial role in the peace effort, so that once and for all we have a peace plan,” he said. Ayman. Safadi.
“We are not going to continue talking about a process. It has very negative connotations, we were in a process for 30 years and it took us nowhere,” he added.
