Inflation in Spain of 9% in September with the highest rise in food since 1994

Prices rose 8.9% in Spain in September compared to the same month in 2021, 1.6 points less than in August, despite the highest rise in food prices since 1994, according to official data released this Friday.

In August, inflation (variation in prices with respect to the same period of the previous year) had been 10.5%.

Electricity prices contributed to this moderation in price growth in September, given the increase they had seen in September 2021; and transportation, because fuel prices fell when they had risen a year ago, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

However, the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 14.4%, six tenths more than in August and the highest rise since January 1994.

The Spanish INE highlights, in this group, the rise in the prices of vegetables, milk, cheese, eggs and meat.

Excluding food and energy prices (core inflation), the change in prices in September was 6.2%, two tenths less than in August.

This is the second consecutive month of moderation in inflation in Spain, which has been on a constant rise since February 2021, with the exception of April this year, when it moderated 0.5 tenths.
