The Spanish Prime Minister maintains controversial statements about the Israeli offensive

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez this Sunday maintained his statements on the retaliatory offensive in Gaza that angered Israel, arguing that it was “a matter of humanity,” EFE reported.

During a visit to Egypt’s Rafah terminal on Friday with his Belgian counterpart Alexander De Croo, Pedro Sanchez declared that the “arbitrary killing of innocent civilians” in the Palestinian territories was “absolutely unacceptable”, a position also echoed by the Belgian leader expressed. Both called for a lasting ceasefire at the time.

Israel immediately announced that it would summon the ambassadors of both countries to an official protest, accusing the two leaders of “supporting terrorism.”

Pedro Sanchez responded to these accusations at a Socialist Party meeting in Madrid on Sunday, saying: “Condemning the despicable attacks of a terrorist group like Hamas while simultaneously killing Palestinians indiscriminately in Gaza is not a matter of politics or ideology, it is a matter of humanity.”

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said on television Friday that he had called the Israeli ambassador in Madrid to formally protest Israel’s accusations and criticism of Sánchez.

According to Israeli authorities, 1,200 people, the vast majority of whom were civilians, were massacred during the Islamist movement Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, a level of violence unprecedented in the country’s history.

In retaliation, Israel vowed to eliminate Hamas, classified as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and Israel, by relentlessly bombing Palestinian territory on October 27 and launching a ground offensive until the start of the ceasefire on Friday.

In the Gaza Strip, about 15,000 people were killed by Israeli attacks, including many children and young people, according to the Hamas government.
