Pope’s health condition is “good and stable” after a flu-like illness

The health of Pope Francis, who suffered from the flu this weekend, is currently “good and stable”, the Vatican announced on Monday, confirming the pope’s meeting with the president of Paraguay.

“The pope’s health condition is good and stable, he has no fever and his respiratory condition has clearly improved,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement.

“The X-ray ruled out pneumonia, but showed pneumonia causing breathing difficulties. To increase the effectiveness of therapy, antibiotic treatment is administered intravenously,” the note adds.

The 86-year-old Argentine pope plans to travel to Dubai on Friday, where the annual COP28 climate meeting will take place.

The pope’s “flu-like condition” forced him to cancel Saturday morning audiences.

On Sunday he gave the Angelus blessing from his home, and not from the window of the apostolic palace opposite St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

Francis has made defending the environment one of the causes of his papacy and will speak at COP28 in Dubai on December 2.

The Pope is expected to call on countries to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Before the trip, “several important commitments planned for the coming days were postponed (…) to facilitate the Pope’s recovery”, while “others, of an institutional or more tolerable nature (…), were maintained” , explains. Matteo Bruni.

The Pope is expected to receive Paraguay President Santiago Peña next Monday.

Francisco’s health condition has deteriorated in recent months, requiring him to use a wheelchair while traveling.
